Clan-by-clan – Chapter 1 part 3 – Ventrue

September 12, 2010 Leave a comment

Group 3:

Edward Vignes

Clan: Ventrue (group 3)

Capacity: 6

Disciplines: DOM PRE for

Camarilla: You may burn a card that requires Dominate from your hand to cause an action directed at Edward to fail.

Edward in another great Ventrue – he doesn’t have a title but his special is awesome. It’s almost impossible to rush/temptate/rape him and the more players try to harm him the more we cycle our hand. Although there is only one working archetype featuring Edward, which is “Power bleed”, that’s a real Tier 1 deck. The deck is very straightforward and very, very effective. The problem is that many players use to play that deck on larger tournaments as it guarantees you several VPs, so during tbig tournaments like EC Day 1 you would probably see several decks featuring Edward.  The idea is simple – influence as many vampires as possible in 3-4 rounds and start bleeding. If you’re lucky you should get your first VP in round 5-6 or so. This deck has problems against weenie decks, mid cap – walls, and ally decks as it concentrates on block denial/tap minion cards.

General rule – the less players remain there on the table, the simpler the game is for you – so try to oust preys one by one as quick as possible, before the whole table becomes your predator…

Common cards :

  • Govern the Unaligned – bleed bonus, influence speed up,
  • Deflection – bleed defense,
  • Majesty – combat defense,
  • Daring the dawn – block denial card
  • Seduction – block denial card
  • Anarch Troublemaker – tap minions card,
  • Misdirection – tap minion card,
  • Pentex ™ Subversion – switch off a minion card,
  • Jake Washington – blood gain, chump blocker,

How to play against that type of deck :

If you play a rush deck, the idea is simple – kill all the vampires except Edward (you will probably never enter combat with him) then try to block his bleeds, rescue torpor, hunt actions and simply torporize him, however it may not be simple task. If you play wall, it’s rather simple to stop Edward, however if there are 4+ vampires on the table, you may have some problems. Ally decks are also effective agains Edward. Any other types of decks must be very carefull (i.e. there are many bounce cards in that deck so bleed slowly, or do not bleed at all, in order not to help Edward oust his prey). Try to find allies on the table, if you don’t work together Edward is probably going to kill all of you.

Probably the best build was designed by TTC Master (Orian Gissler)

Clan-by-clan – Chapter 1 part 2 – Ventrue

Ventrue – “Regere sanguine, regere in veritatem est.”

Today let’s focus on group 2 Ventrue. In my opinion the best group 2 Ventrue vampire is :

Arika

Clan: Ventrue (group 2)

Capacity: 11

Disciplines: DOM FOR OBF PRE aus cel

Camarilla Inner Circle: If Arika is ready during your prey’s untap phase, your prey chooses which locations he or she keeps in play. For each location he or she controls, your prey burns 1 pool or burns the location. +2 bleed.

The choice was pretty simple. Arike is considered to be the best vampire in the game by many players. Great set of disciplines, superb special and bleed bonus makes her one-man-army. In many games you can kill your prey with Arika in one turn. OBF gives her a great advantage, especially when combined with other vampires like Marcus Vittel, Queen Anne, Lucinde Alastor, Catherine Du Bois. Arika’s set of disciplines gives you possibility to build several different archetypes, where each of them is very powerful. After banning PTO Arika is rarement seen on tournaments but still it’s a very popular vampire.

Most common decks featuring Arika with a short description:

  • Arika feat. big cap vampires with OBF/obf

Influences 2-4 big cap vampires. Bleeds for 10 + in one turn plus plays some deadly political cards with Voters. Heavy bloating, and bleeding capabilities make that deck an easy one to play for new players. Effective agains most archetypes. Real threat for the table if not stopped in the early game. Can be designed in many ways : defensive style- lost of Majesties, prevents, Obediences and Deflections, straight forward build with no defense at all, just pure aggression (played by Pietrzu in Wrocław 2009).

  • Arika Rapes the World

Nice deck designed by Erol Oenguen.  Arika steals vampires via Mind Rape action card, uses Heidelberg Castle to move blood/equipment/retainers to our vampire, plays banishment on empty vampire. Able to inflict 10+ damage in one turn. Effective agains big cap/middle cap decks. Weak against ally and weenie decks.

  • Arika Alastors

Combat defense – Assault Riffle. Bleeds and rushes blockers.  Difficult to play, not efficient. Kind of fun deck with good vampires.

  • Arika feat Maris Streck (Council of Doom)

Arika plays Alastor rushes, bleed, and waits for block. Maris Streck plays Parity Shifts and gives intercept for Arika. Difficult to play. Efficient against weenie decks and deck with no combat defense.

  • Turbo Arika

Description taken from TWDA :

” Comments: Well the run is you get Arika out, wait a turn
(hopefully no pentex, smash, or her getting torped), next
you equip her with soul gem, Freak Drive to untap, then
call Praxis S whatever to increase her capacity +1 and to
make her prince of whatever, Awe it so you burn the blood
off Arika down to 2, pass the vote with 22 votes for, now
you are ready to bleed, force of will +2 bleed, daring the
dawn to make it unblockable at inferior, conditioning for
a bleed of 8, taking 3 agg damage burning Arika and a new
ones comes into play. Play Praxis, Awe, Force of Will,
Daring the Dawn, Conditioning bleed of 8, if you get stuck
you can play distraction to not only get rid of the other
soul gems and rubbish from your hand but to get back on
track with the card combo. Freak drive to then call PS

Repeat until you have wiped everyone out”

Common cards :

  • Govern the Unaligned/Scouting Mission/Enchant Kindred – bleed bonus, influence speed up,
  • Zillah’s Valley, Information Highway – influence speed up,
  • KRC – pool damage,
  • Banishment – defensive (against predator), aggressive (against prey),
  • Freak Drive – several actions per turn,
  • Ventrue Headquarters – gain votes,
  • Voter Captivation – gain blood,
  • Deflection – bleed defense,
  • Majesty – combat defense,
  • Obedience – combat defense,
  • Secure Heaven – anti rush card,
  • Lost in Crowds, Elder Impersonation, Forgotten Labyrinth – stealth cards,
  • Villain/Minion Tap – pool gain
  • Golconda : Inner Peace – defense (our torporized vampires), aggressive (prey vampires)
  • Dreams of the Sphinx – card cycling/building “strong hand”,
  • Monastery of Shadows – extra stealth and +1 hand size
  • Reins of Power, Political Strangehold, Ancient Influence – poll damage/pool gain

Arika’s classical deck is very nice to play with. We simply influence her, pray to survive the first turn – play Villein, Secure Heaven, Govern on superior, Freak Drive, bleed, Freak Drive, political action with Voter and Freak Drive to stay untapped to bounce bleeds. Once we have 3+ minions with lots of votes, we can easily inflict 20 + damage to our prey’s pool (as 2+ stealth actions) once we had built our hand strong enough. Even with Arika, standing alone in our ready region we can play Reins of Power  freak and bleed for 8, which causes 13 damage to prey’s pool. That’s cool, isn’t it ??

Let’s check a sample deck featuring Arika :

I would put some extra Villeins in exchange for Minion Taps.

Clan-by-clan – Chapter 1 part 1 – Ventrue

August 27, 2010 Leave a comment

“Regere sanguine, regere in veritatem est.”

Ventrue is one of the most popular clan in VTES. Why ? The answer is simple. From the very beginning of VTES vampires, their set of disciplines and clan cards were strong enough to build archetypes which could easily win games. Probably that is why so many people choose Ventrue as their first clan.

I have chosen some  cards I would like to talk about. Let’s go through Ventrue TOP vampires, cards and deck archetypes:

Group 1 :

Emerson Bridges

Clan: Ventrue (group 1)

Capacity: 8

Disciplines: DOM FOR PRE pot

Camarilla Prince of Washington, DC.

No special, but together with Timothy Crowley and Walther Nash he ruled in many VTES tournaments from the very beginning. The old Ventrue mid-cap princes archetype (known as “Lawfirm”) is still very powerful. Emerson is 8 cap so influenced to the ready region as the first vampire we can save lots of resources playing Govern the Unaligned/Scouting Mission/Enchant Kindred at superior to influence the rest of the band quickly enough to get the advantage.

Common cards:

  • Govern the Unaligned/Scouting Mission/Enchant Kindred – bleed bonus, influence speed up,
  • Parity Shift – gain pool, poll damage,
  • KRC – pool damage,
  • Consanguineous Boon – pool gain,
  • Freak Drive – several actions per turn,
  • Ventrue Headquarters – gain votes,
  • Ventrue Directorate Assembly – gain votes,
  • Voter Captivation – gain blood
  • Third Tradition : Progeny – extra minions for boon, bleed and a chump blocker,
  • Deflection – bleed defense,
  • Majesty – combat defense,
  • Daring the dawn – block denial card
  • Seduction – block denial card
  • Anarch Troublemaker – tap minions card,
  • Misdirection – tap minion card,

With only those cards we are able to build a very strong deck. Usually we should not play aggressive with it, but wait for our chance to oust our prey in one turn, playing combos like KRC+Freak+Bleed with Daring, or by tapping prey minions with Anarch Troublemaker/Misdirection and bleeding for 10+ with several vampires.
